About Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT)
The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) is an endowed trust that was established in 1958 and has a long history of supporting public interest, educational, and other philanthropic projects. The trust aspires to improve education standards in South Africa, believing that every South African should have access to higher education standards at all levels. The trust makes contributions to non-profit organizations and institutions, mainly in the field of education.
Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Scholarships 2022
South Africans studying postgraduate Masters, Doctoral, or Postdoctoral degrees in South Africa or abroad are eligible for the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Scholarships 2022. The student who applies for the scholarship must have a strong academic record.
The following categories are available for the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Scholarships 2022:
- OMT Postgraduate Scholarship for Local Studies – OMT offers scholarships every year to South African citizens at Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels.
- OMT Postgraduate Scholarship for International Studies – OMT offers scholarships to South African students pursuing their education internationally and can fulfil the eligibility requirements. This scholarship is provided to students pursuing Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral level education.
Coverage Value
The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Scholarships 2022 awards will not be made on a full-cost basis. Depending on the conditions, the value may change. Students applying to this program are advised to look for additional sources of support. All additional scholarship applications must be listed in the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Scholarship application.
The students are chosen for the award on the basis of merit and with the consent of the OMT trustees. The scholarships are given out once a year, and students must apply at the start of the academic year.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the OMT scholarship 2022, students must be able to meet the following conditions.
For local applicants:
- The applicant must be a South African Citizen or a Permanent Resident of South Africa.
- Foreign nationals can only apply to the Postdoctoral programs.
- The applicant must be doing a postgraduate qualification – Masters, Doctorate or Post-doctorate.
- MBA’s, DBA’s and students doing any other qualification are not eligible to apply.
- The applicant must be studying towards the qualification for the first time. If the student already has a degree in the same qualification, they cannot apply.
- The student must be enrolled in a public higher education institution in South Africa (only for local applicants).
In addition to the above criteria, the international applicants must also fulfill the following requirements:
- The student applying to the scholarship program must be intending to study towards a discipline that is not available in South Africa or must prove that they have reached a point in their education that required the direction of leaders across the world in their particular field of study.
- The applicant must be enrolled at a higher learning institution internationally.
- The applicant must be willing to follow a career in research, development, academia or related fields in South Africa.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted through email, along with all required documents, to the email addresses shown below. If you’re applying to a local college or an overseas university, make sure you enter the correct email address. “OMT Scholarship Application” can be the subject line for both applications.
- OMT Postgraduate Scholarship for Local Studies – email your application to localpostgrad@omt.org.za.
- OMT Postgraduate Scholarship for International Studies – email your application to intlpostgrad@omt.org.za.
If you’re sending two emails with your application because your materials won’t fit in one, make sure to explain why in the email application.
Within 2 to 3 months of the application deadline, applicants will get an email informing them of their application status.
Documents Required
Applicants for OMT scholarships must submit the following documents with their email application:
- A signed motivation statement, not more than 500 words.
- A brief outline about the field of study, choice of institution, programme of study and period of study.
- An updated CV, which is not more than 3 pages long.
- A certified South African ID document of the applicant.
- Transcripts for all programmes that the applicant has completed or is enrolled in.
- Copies of degree certificates.
- Proof of acceptance or registration at an approved institution.
- Details of project or research costs and any other funding required.
- Estimated budget filled on the following excel file for local and international scholarship applicants – https://www.omt.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/OMT-Budget-template.xlsx.
- Three Letters of Recommendation (LORs) must be sent directly to the OMT by the recommenders’ to the following emails with the applicants’ name and reference letter as the email’s subject.

If you’ve applied to more than one higher education institution, make sure to mention the names of all of them, as well as your top choice, in your application email. In this instance, you just need to submit one application.

Closing Date
The following dates must be adhered to in order to be considered for the OMT Scholarships:
- If you are beginning college between April 2022 and June 2022 – 31 January 2022
- If you are beginning college between July 2022 and October 2022 – 31 March 2022
