About University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is a public research university in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was established in 1874 as the Yorkshire College of Science.

In 1884 it merged with the Leeds School of Medicine and was renamed Yorkshire College. It became part of the federal Victoria University in 1887, joining Owens College (which became the University of Manchester) and University College Liverpool (which became the University of Liverpool).

In 1904 a royal charter was granted to the University of Leeds by King Edward VII.

The university has 36,330 students, the 5th largest university in the UK (out of 169). From 2006 to present, the university has consistently been ranked within the top 5 (alongside the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Nottingham and the University of Edinburgh) in the United Kingdom for the number of applications received.

Leeds had an income of £789.6 million in 2019/20, of which £139.9 million was from research grants and contracts. The university has financial endowments of £82.1 million (2019–20), ranking outside the top ten British universities by financial endowment.

Notable alumni include current Leader of the Labour Party Keir Stamer, former Secretary of State Jack Straw, former co-chairman of the Conservative Party Sayeeda Warsi, Piers Sellers (NASA astronaut) and six Nobel laureates.

The Leeds Doctoral Scholarships 2022

Up to 14 Leeds Doctoral Scholarships are available for Home fee-rated students for Session 2022/23 for study in the following Faculties: Arts, Humanities and Cultures; Biological Sciences; Business; Engineering and Physical Sciences; Environment; Medicine and Health; Social Sciences.

The fully funded research scholarship is available for 3 years for full-time study and 5 years for part-time study.

Funding

  • These awards are available to Home fee-rated applicants. The award will cover fees at the University of Leeds standard home rate of fees
  • A maintenance grant at the standard UKRI rate (£15,609 in Session 2021/22)

Entry Requirements

The following are the entry requirements for the Leeds Doctoral Scholarships;

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline.

The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree.

Applicants are advised to check with the relevant School prior to making an application.

Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

English language requirements

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent.

The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.

Other Conditions

  • Applicants must not have already been awarded or be currently studying for a doctoral degree 
  • Awards must be taken up by 1 October 2022
  • The awards are available for new Postgraduate Researchers undertaking full-time or part-time research study leading to the degree of PhD.  
  • Students who are already registered for PhD research study are excluded  from applying
  •  Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this Leeds Doctoral Scholarships.

How to apply for Leeds Doctoral Scholarships?

Stage 1

In order to be considered for the Leeds Doctoral Scholarships, you must submit all the required supporting documents for your application for study*.

Any study applications that are not accompanied by the documents requested by the scholarship deadline will not be considered for the award. 

Please note that an unsuccessful application for the Leeds Doctoral Scholarships does not exclude you from applying for other research study opportunities or scholarships offered by the University of Leeds. 

*The supporting documents you need to provide with your study application are listed on website for the School/Faculty in which you are applying to study. 

Stage 2

Please note that, due to the large volume of applications, the Postgraduate Scholarships Office will not enter into any correspondence regarding the progress of an application until the outcome is known.
