The speaker of the 8th parliament who has gained much popularity over time for his number 3 comment has bounced back again into the news, this time he has shown his bravado towards the executive arm of government.
The speaker, Alban Sumana Bagbin, while speaking at a post-budget forum in Ho in the Volta region bemoaned that Parliament approves budgets that benefit the executive more than the legislature and the judiciary. He said, “this year, all the laws we have been passing are laws we passed to benefit the executive, even we forget about Parliament in the language we use, this is self-inflicted we must correct it.”
He also stressed that as speaker, he has the powers through parliament to remove the president, Nana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from office while on the other hand, the president cannot do same to him, “… as Speaker, the president cannot remove me, but I can through Parliament get the president removed”
He also reminded the Members of Parliament of the powers they wield in law and that they must as Parliament be able to stand for themselves and not to play to the whims and caprices of the executive. “Let me reemphasized that the 8th Parliament is properly positioned not to allow itself to be bullied into playing second fiddle to the executive” he stated.
He has however assured that despite the fact that he has such powers, he wouldn’t exercise them.
