How do you expect Ghanaians to contribute when they are hungry? – Henry Osei Akoto slams National Cathedral Secretariat

A stalwart of the National Democratic Congress who hopes to become the next national organizer of the party; Henry Osei Akoto, has lambasted the secretariat of the national cathedral for being inconsiderate to the plights of the ordinary Ghanaian masses.

His comment comes on the back of calls on Ghanaians by government and it’s allies in the national cathedral enterprise, the most recent of it emanating from the office of the executive director of the cathedral’s secretariat, to make monthly monetary commitments towards the realization of the sacred project.

In his considered view, Mr. Akoto believes such a call should not be entertained, as it is an attempt to financially overexploit the suffering citizens who are already reeling under financial quagmire occasioned by the prevailing harsh economic conditions in the country.

In a tweet, the NDC national organizer hopeful bemoaned the constant pressure being exerted on the Christian population of the country by the cathedral secretariat and government officials to undertake such contributions.

“The Executive Director at the National Cathedral Secretariat said if the 21 M Ghanaians give them 100gh a month, they can complete it. Did Akufo-Addo put Ghanaian Christians on monthly salary? If he hasn’t, how do they expect the suffering masses to get the money?,” Henry Osei Akoto quizzed in a tweet.

Two months ago, the Minority caucus in parliament through the fierce frontal role of the member of parliament for North Tongu constituency; Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made stunning revelations about how the Akuffo Addo administration has sunk colossal amounts from the public purse into the controversial cathedral without the knowledge of parliament, for which reason they called on government to be honest with the source of funding for the project.

This sparked a lot of dissatisfaction and wild acrimony within the public space, relative to the timing and funding of the cathedral.

While majority of the populace believe it is a misplaced priority, a lot more others say it is needless and a waste of scarce resources, since it is taxpayer’s money which is being expended on a personal pledge of the president.

The project has since come to a standstill after the stark revelations by the minority, apparently because of the Secretariat’s inability to raise money for its continuation, thus, the basis for which government and the executive director of the National Cathedral Secretariat are calling on the general public to donate  towards its completion.

But Mr. Osei Akoto differs in thought, suggesting that, such donations or contributions are not feasible in a junk economy like hours.
